In the one game played, I was very successful with Village-Apprentice-Bridge combos; after ditching the initial weight, I traded up Golds, Platinums, and Colonies for 2 or 3 Colonies on various turns, with spare Actions for Witches. I was really lucky never to lose anything to a Thief…
I imagine that the Gardens and Philosopher's Stone distracted the other people from an efficiency-based strategy like that one. Myself, I just never buy the Stone, as a rule. (Don't like the counting.)
