This was the game, we played two times. We've tried about five strategies altogether and I've lost every time.

What would you play in this situation?

I'd start with silvers. Maybe

I'd start with silvers. Maybe a beaurocrat. Then get some secret chambers. If you get one in a turn with a silver you are guaranteed at least 5 coin unless they play militia. Try to build up on festivals. Secret chamber protects you from thief and somewhat mitigates the effectiveness of militia as it gives you more choice on what you discard. Plus you can use it to protect from bureaucrat. After that build towards more nobles. It synergies with festival well since it gives actions or cards. That's how I'd play it. There aren't many ways to get extra cards and actions so many people will be doing one action per turn. Festival gives players a big advantage since +2 coin is good plus extra actions and an extra buy. More importantly they can't be stolen like money can. If you get enough secret chambers getting golds or stash would be much less risky. With nobles and festivals you should be able to get the provinces to win the game.
